CONTRYSIDE

Monument Štiavnica’s Hills, with its highest mountain, Sitno, 1009 meters above sea level, covers an area of 77 630 hectares. Štiavnica´s Hills are the largest volcanic mountain chain in Slovakia and there is a large variety of fauna in this area. Some of protected plants exist here, for example: Golden-headed lily (Lilium martagon), Carpathian saffron (Crocus Heuffelianus), Pulsatilla patens (Pulsatilla grandis) and numerous roses. Also macular salamander (Salamandra salamandra), papillate paddock (Bufo bufo), some of rare butterflies and a lot of other invertebrates can be found here. There are also large predators such as the lynx (Lynx lynx), wild cat (Felis silvestris) and brown bear (Ursus arctor), from birds we can see lurid eagle (Aquila pomarina), little eagle (Hieraatus pennatus) and some merlins (Falco subbuteo).




WATER RESERVOIRS

Not so far from our boarding – house you can see unique water reservoirs called The Richňavské Jazerá Lakes Route with the high dam of 23,40m.These were built up on the base of a project by Samuel Mikovíny in 1738 – 1740. Water from these reservoirs was used for the needs of mining machinery. These were inscribed on the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESSCO in December 1993. Nowadays, the reservoirs mentioned below observe only a recreational function. At present, 23 water reservoirs are preserved, they serve for recreation and fishing.

ENVIRONMENT

Boarding – house Richňava is situated close to the historical mining town - Banská Štiavnica. This town is one of the most beautiful and interesting towns in Slovakia with its unrepeatable atmosphere and with lots of museums and expositions. There are 201 national cultural monuments and sites in the territory of the town. The history of the town is strongly ingrained with the traditions of mining, which began no later than in 1238, when Banská Štiavnica was granted privileges of a royal town. In 1762, when Maria Theresa established a Mining Academy, Banská Štiavnica became a centre of development of mining science and technology in Europe. It is necessary to mention some of unique cultural monuments, such as two Renaissance anti Turkish fortresses, New and the Old castles, the heart of the town – Holy Trinity Square, the late gothic St. Catherine Church, the Town Hall, the Knocking Tower and one of the most beautiful dominants of the town – the baroque Calvary.


Another interesting monument is The Mansion in Svätý Anton, Baroque – Classical Mansion, it is has very interesting with its exhibitions of art, history and hunting that is situated in a close-by village called Svätý Anton.

Mining open-air museum is the unique one example in Slovakia. The most popular part of it, the subterranean exposition, offers you an unforgettable experience from visiting mine - its oldest parts date back to the 17th century.
Precious in the region are mineral springs that well out in Sklené Teplice and Vyhne. The main attraction of the spa is its cave-bath and an aqua park has also been built there recently.
